Flexible Packaging, Sustainability

Why Your Industrial Plant Should Have the IGBC Certification

Over the years, the amount of industrial pollution and waste is increasing at an alarming rate. It has always been a matter of concern and the government implies certain norms to reduce the same. Not only this but slowly and gradually people have started shifting to more sustainable alternatives to ensure minimum harm to the environment. Flexible packaging and sustainability go hand-in-hand and that’s why people have started replacing rigid packaging with it.

How Flexible Packaging and Sustainability are Intertwined?

  • Less energy Usage: Flexible Packaging can be manufactured with comparatively less water and other raw materials due to its lightweight.
  • Portable and Secure: These packaging solutions are compact and consume less space while transporting, offer higher seal strength, durability, higher shelf life as well as are eCommerce friendly.
  • Environment friendly: While manufacturing flexible packaging, they reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel usage.
  • High product-to-package ratio: Flexible packaging provides a quite high product-to-package ratio contributing to environmental sustainability.

Reasons to Opt for IGBC Certification

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) was formed in the year 2001 with the vision “To enable a sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India to be one of the global leaders in the sustainable built environment by 2025”.

The rating program by IGBC is the first-ever program in India which is exclusively created for the industrial sector. But it’s a matter of pride and honour that more and more industries are coming forward to be a part of this and help towards building a sustainable environment. This certification is based on accepted energy and environmental principles and strikes a balance between known established practices and emerging concepts.

These Green Existing Buildings have tremendous benefits, both tangible and intangible.

The tangible benefits include:

  • Energy savings: 30 – 40%
  • Water savings: 20 – 30%

The intangible benefits include:

  • Enhanced indoor air quality
  • Good daylighting
  • Health & well-being of the occupants
  • Safety of the workmen

There are also certain questions about how to do these IGBC Green Factory Buildings rating system works and what they address. Well, the green features falling under the stated categories are evaluated by the team:

  • Site Selection and Planning
  • Water Conservation
  • Energy Conservation
  • Materials Conservation
  • Indoor Environmental Quality and Occupational Health
  • Innovation & Design Process

Levels of Certification

You’d come across that various industries might have listed themselves on different levels of green building certification. These levels are awarded based on the total credits they have earned.

The threshold criteria for certification/provisional levels are as under:

Certification Level Points Recognition
Certified 51 – 60 Best Practices
Silver 61 – 70 Outstanding Performance
Gold 71 – 80 National Excellence
Platinum 81-100 Global Leadership

Once an industry receives the IGBC Green Factory Buildings rating, it is valid for a period of 3 years from the date of issue of the certification. The industry must adhere to the mandatory requirements, which are non-negotiable. Upon expiration, they can apply for recertification. To apply for it, the projects have to show compliance with the latest version of the IGBC Green Factory Buildings rating prevailing at the time of recertification.
